Headaches
The most common types of headaches are migraines, tension-type headaches and combination headaches Migraines affect around 10% of adult population, they usually only affect one side and almost always develop before the age of 30 years. They are three times more common in women and along with pain; symptoms can include vomiting, sensitivity to sound and light, alteration in appetite, mood and libido.
A migraine is caused by fluctuations in the blood vessels in the head (cerebral vessels). The blood vessels initially constrict i.e. the space through which the blood flows becomes less and this can cause the ‘aura’ of a migraine such as flashing lights or tunnel vision. What follows is a rebound response of the blood vessel where it dilates i.e. blood flow increases due to an increase in vessel size and along with this comes the pain. There are different triggers for migraine such as menstruation, stress, menopause but migraine may also be brought on by certain types of food; chocolate, cheeses and red wine.
Neck symptoms frequently occur with migraine along with an increase in tension of the surrounding muscles. By releasing this tension and restoring normal neck mechanics this can hugely relieve the migraine.
Tension-type headache is usually felt in the forehead, temples and at the base of the skull. It is usually associated with stress and poor posture and can present as a band-like tightness over the forehead with neck pain. Again, with the tension in the muscles this of headache responds well to chiropractic treatment where
the function of the neck can be restored and postural exercises prescribed to correct posture specifically for you and your type of posture. Combination headaches are simply a combination of several different types of headaches and can take elements of each type and can present with constant pain lasting days, they have mixed components such as tension, depression, neck dysfunction, migraine and side effects from pain medication that you are usually taking for the headache!!
Please remember; our Chiropractors are all fully qualified and members of The General Chiropractic Council who all use a range of techniques including manipulation, massage, electrotherapy, and can give advice on posture, exercise and ergonomics.
